I saw Transformers 2 Wednesday night, and as I write this I still sort of feel like I have a echoing headache from that movie. Now I enjoyed it, in sort of a mindless way that there were cool explosions, and interesting bits of story here and there with the humans (also Soundwave was epic.) But generally I find that reading Ebert’s review of the movie I can’t really disagree with him all that much.
Could 2009 be the Best and Worst Holiday Season for Videogames Ever?
With E3 just wrapping up its hard to not be excited for all the games set to come out this year, especially in the fall. When you actually look at them all though you’ll likely begin to realize that this fall may in fact be the best one for videogames ever. In terms of quality games that is. Here is just a partial list of what is going to be released this fall, between the end of August and the start of 2010:
Valve, this is an intervention
Valve, this is an intervention.
Valve, first off I love your work. Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Left 4 Dead, and Team Fortress 2 (at launch,) all amazing games which I have spent more time then I want to think about playing, but every moment was great and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Which is what brings me here today, having this intervention for you, you need to realize Valve that you are hurting Team Fortress 2. I know you guys love it as much as I do, and you think you are doing the right thing, that’s it’s, “for its own good,” and that you “are just making it better.” But you guys need to take a step back an really think about what you are doing.
GDC Coverage?
I’m going to be attending the Game Developer’s Conference out in San Fransisco from the 25th to the 27th. I’m planning on taking pictures, and checking out lots of things. Which either means me writing up a daily overview of what I saw/did, or doing an overview coverage of the whole thing when I get back. I’d like to do the daily thing, but I have a feeling the overview afterwards is more likely to happen.
Anyway stay tuned.
Solutions Oriented
With Amazon and Toys R Us muscling in on GameStop’s almost monopoly of buying back videogames, and selling used copies, the discussion of used games has popped up in a lot of the podcasts I listen to again. Now I’m not going to say that it’s not fair that video game developers/publishers don’t get a cut from these sales, because it is fair. Which is to say this is not a industry vs. retailer issue, but rather a secondary market/right of first sale issue for consumers.
Dedicated Servers: Where Everybody Knows Your Name
I was listening to one of my normal podcasts recently, called In-Game Chat, the show’s hosts ended up talking about the differences between console multiplayer and PC multiplayer in games. Specifically talking about their problems with matchmaking systems in console multiplayer games where the game tries to find people of similar skill for you to play against. As compared to what you find in PC multiplayer, which are dedicated servers run by players that act as sort of hubs or places for people to gather.
1UP and UGO Apparently Do Not Mix Well
It was really sad to hear about what is happening over at 1up.com tonight. Not because UGO bought them, which had been rumored about for a while since 1up’s parent company, Ziff-Davis Media, has been trying to sell them since although they are profitable they are an expensive opperation. What’s sad is all the people losing their jobs (just who is not there anymore is being kept track of on nicely on Joystiq.)
Is videogame industry recession proof?
Garnett Lee over at 1up.com recently posted an article over at the site talking about the US’s economic recession is effecting the videogame industry, who has been saying that they are recession proof because they have been having a record sales, and the fact that entertainment industries tend to do very well in economic downturns historically.
1GO Awards 2008
Figured since I did these last year I should do them again this year, although this year I’ve decided to not make it completely about videogames since the site isn’t completely about videogames anymore. Also I had a hard time coming up with nominees for all the categories I came up with last year. Also I decided to be lazy and not do any write ups for the awards like I did last year, so anyway on with the awards.
Did 3D Graphics ruin videogames?
There was an article recently by Luis Villazon called, “Why adding 3D graphics to games was a bad idea.” I feel like in general the article is really more about how he prefers 2D graphics aesthetically more compared to 3D ones. Which is perfectly fine and all, I mean we’ve sort of mastered and completely understand how to make things look good in two dimensions, and how to convey certain ideas through two dimensional representations. 3D on the other hand is very young in comparison, so especially in the early steps into 3D gaming it was more trial and error in how best to represent things, and best to convey things to the player.
